4.5 stars, rounding up since this was a free download.I loved this book for two reasons. First, the hero was a software engineer who was kind of backward socially. He kept doing and saying the wrong thing to the heroine and was kind of oblivious as to what he was doing wrong, which was very endearing. Second, the heroine was plus-sized but instead of having a poor self-image and suffering from a lack of self-esteem as is common in romance when a heroine is a larger size, she was very well-adjusted, socially adept, had an active dating life, and didn't waste time wringing her hands over things. She wore bold clothes, loved to shop, and was girly, yet self-sufficient. I found her to be a refreshing change of pace. The story had a good balance of intensity versus lighter moments, and I had a hard time putting it down. I also loved the setting and since I live in the SF Bay Area, I can say that it was very realistic, right down to the atmosphere at the internet company where they worked. All in all a very enjoyable read.

This Time Next Door Oakland Hills Book 2 edition by Gretchen Galway Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I really enjoyed the first 2/3 of this book. I liked the characters a great deal, although the trope of the geeky millionaire is kind of lazy. What I didn’t like was what Blair had done to precipitate the plot line. It was a crappy thing to do. And then for Rose to support her - it was just a lot to swallow. I thought when John was needling Rose in basement when she came to move her things, that Rose would finally explode and admit her deep-seated resentment about Blair and John’s affair. But no. Second, the whole bit about the staged house and it being sold really went nowhere and took up a lot of pages. Finally, I didn’t think severe depression was a very clever or funny ruse to trick Rose into attending a family getaway. Basically, there was way too much lying manipulation used for the reconciliation. And I would have liked one last chapter to see how they were a month after the sudden reconciliation
After reading a lot of paranormal and other genres I like to switch it up with a few light funny romances, and I hit a home run with Gretchen Galway! I was fortunate to come across it when it was free, though I would have gladly paid full price for this little piece of gold!
I was caught up from the very beginning. I instantly developed a girl crush on Rose; our busty main lady! She has every quality that you wish you possessed, or at least made you wish you had a friend just like her. Confidence, sense of humor, loyalty, etc. She never took herself too seriously and she was often blasé about her effect on men. She knew she had it but it didn't rule her interaction with others. She was still very sweet and full of substance.
The male lead, Mark, was just so adorable... and awkward! Awkwardly adorable! What he lacked in social grace he made up for in heat. Yeah, he was a hot computer nerd/ child genius who knew how to work it in the bed room. Lol. Don't we all want one of our very own?
Their romance was not rushed, but was not stagnant. In other words it felt like it happened in "real life" (whatever that is...) time. It was believable in that it wasn't instant attraction. There was enough conflict to give this book some real substance, laced with heart warming, and heart breaking moments. Gretchen Galway has a knack for balancing the comedy with the romance and trouble. Each of her characters are equally balanced with flaws and redeeming qualities. Something I admire greatly in an author. I may read fiction but I like the characters to be "human".
I usually like to leave one critique but in all honesty... I can't think of a one )
I'd like to note that the cover is what first attracted me to the book. I was tired of half naked bodies and mournful/gothic looking teens. *gasp*
Also, I bought another title of hers (The Supermodel's Best Friend) right away, already finished it, and plan on buying another after posting this review. Lol.
This book was well written for the most part. The ending seemed rushed and really didn't flow very well. Spoilers ahead. That being said, what I didn't like was that rose was described as a big girl, fat girl, weight lifter. So what was she? Big boned? 5'10 and 200 lbs is not necessarily fat for a weight lifter so not a very concise descripription of the main heroine. I really didn't like her sniveling little friend Blair and thought how on earth did these 2 become friends because I don't see a woman who is that strong being friends with a sniveling little weasel who wld sleep with your boyfriend even if u were going to break up with him. How high school is that? I thought this book could have moved along just as well without the Blair/sleazy boyfriend/baby daddy john person. All of that being said, there were several things the author got wrong just for effects sake like inducing labor when she was barely 3 months along, it's called a DNC not induction. I suppose I am really disappointed because I think this book had so much promise, it was really funny in parts but it made u think less of Rose for sticking With such a weasely stinking friend. At some point u have to close the door to people who would damage you, Blair was that kind of damage. I don't think I will read this author again, I had a hard time finishing this one.
